Insulating Glass Production Lines: The Buying Guide
An insulating glass production line turns single panes into sealed units. It washes the glass, dries it, sets a spacer frame between two or three panes, presses the unit flat and, on most lines, fills the cavity with argon. The line is the heart of a window plant. When it stops, the plant stops.
This guide covers what the line does, the choices you face, and the figures that decide the purchase. Every number below comes from machines listed on GlassMachines.net in this category. Write your specification first, then request pricing on that same specification from every manufacturer you shortlist.
What an insulating glass line does and where it sits on the line
The line sits after cutting and edge work, and before shipping. Glass arrives cut to size and seamed or ground. Toughened glass is tempered before the line, not after. Soft coat Low-E glass must have its coating removed around the edge first, or the seal will fail in service.
Inside the line the glass is washed, dried, inspected, assembled with a spacer frame and pressed. Many lines fill the cavity with gas during the press. What leaves the press is a unit held together only by the primary butyl seal.
The secondary seal comes next. A small shop applies it by hand or on a rotating table such as the Jinan Rongqi Intelligent Technology Co.,Ltd. Double Glazing Glass Rotated Sealant Spreading Table. A second loop feeds the line, and buyers forget to budget for it: spacer preparation. Bar is bent on a WONDEC ABM02/ABM01 Aluminum Spacer Bending Machine, filled with desiccant on a WONDEC FGJ-05 Automatic Desiccant Filling Machine or a Lombarda Macchine S.R.L. Automatic Desiccant Filler, then coated with butyl on an extruder such as the MGM Butyl Coating Machine. After sealing, units go to racks to cure. Plan that space.
Types and configurations
Six choices set the shape of the line. Decide all six before you ask anyone for a number.
Vertical or horizontal. Almost every architectural line stands the glass upright. Vertical uses less floor space and handles large sheets. A horizontal layout lays the glass flat: the MGM Horizontal Insulating Glass Lines come in a small glass version for units within 300 x 1200 mm and a shutter version for units with an integral blind.
Air press or gas press. An air press only closes the unit. A gas press floods the cavity as it closes. The ITECH VEGA Panel Press and the ITECH TAURO Electromechanical Panel Press both state a uniform gas fill above 90 percent. If your market sells energy ratings, buy the gas press.
Spacer system. Rigid aluminium bar is still the volume standard. The MGM TPE Warm Edge Insulating Glass Line applies thermoplastic spacer straight onto the glass. The MGM Flexible Spacer Insulating Glass Line lays flexible strip from a reel. Both switch back to aluminium spacer, which matters while some customers still order it.
Size class. A standard line covers residential and commercial glazing. The MGM Jumbo Size Insulating Glass Line runs units up to 3000 x 7000 mm for facade work, and the ITECH VEGA Panel Press offers a JUMBO series at L5000 mm x H3210 mm. Jumbo equipment needs more building height and different handling at both ends.
Single station or tandem. The MGM Tandem Assembly Insulating Glass Line makes two units at once, up to 1700 x 1700 mm, which lifts output on small repeat sizes without a second line.
Full line or separate machines. A small shop can start with the ITECH Roller Coupling Press, semi automatic, for double and triple units 12 to 50 mm thick. Special constructions use their own presses, such as the Billco Manufacturing, Inc. Heat Press and the Billco Manufacturing, Inc. Cold Roll Press.
How the line works, step by step
The sequence is the same on almost every line. Only the level of automation changes.
- 1. Loading. Panes are stood on the infeed conveyor by hand or by an automatic loader.
- 2. Washing and drying. Brushes and heated water remove cutting oil, glass dust and fingerprints, then air knives dry the sheet. Water quality decides the result: the WONDEC ZK1800/2000/2500 Automatic Insulating Glass Production Line specifies water conductivity at or below 40 microsiemens per centimetre.
- 3. Coating detection. The line must know which face carries the Low-E coating and turn the pane the right way. The WONDEC ZK lines do that automatically.
- 4. Inspection. The pane passes a lit panel so an operator can see marks that survived the wash.
- 5. Spacer placement. On an aluminium line the prepared frame, already filled and coated with butyl, is pressed onto the first pane. On a warm edge line an applicator head lays the spacer directly onto the glass.
- 6. Assembly and press. The second pane meets the first and the press closes the unit. On a gas line the cavity fills during this step. A central glass support keeps the middle pane of a triple unit in position.
- 7. Secondary sealing. A robot extrudes two component sealant into the channel around the edge. The MGM Automatic Insulating Glass Sealing Robot stores finished units on a third conveyor so the machine keeps running.
- 8. Curing. Sealant needs time before the unit is glazed or shipped.
The figures that decide the purchase
Get the figures below in writing from every manufacturer, on one sheet, before you compare anything else. Two of them are the ones buyers skip. Minimum size is the first: if a line will not run your smallest units, you will hand build them forever. Maximum unit thickness is the second: a line rated to 40 mm cannot build a triple unit with two wide cavities, however good the press is.

Choosing by what you produce
Match the line to your order book, not to the largest unit you have ever been asked about.
- Standard residential double glazing: a vertical line with an outside panel press. The WONDEC ZK1800/2000/2500 Automatic Insulating Glass Production Line and the Neptun S.r.l. IG Line both cover this work.
- Stepped and structural units: you need an inside press as well. The WONDEC ZK1800A/2000A/2500A Automatic Insulating Glass Production Line adds one and produces stepped units to X 0 to 150 mm and Y 0 to 50 mm. The ITECH VEGA Panel Press presses structural units on two sides as standard, all sides as an option.
- Argon filled triple glazing: a gas press with a central glass support, or the Huachuang Glass (Shandong) Machinery Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd HCLBZ2536 / HCLBZ2540, which handles double, triple, quadruple and asymmetric units and adjusts its filling space to the measured unit size.

What a quote should include
A line is a project, not a product. Ask for every item below as a separate line, priced or marked as included. Never accept one lump figure, because when something is missing later you will have no basis to argue.
- Factory direct price broken out section by section, so you can add or drop one.
- Export crating, case count and sizes, total weight and volume.
- Freight to your nearest port, whether inland haulage is included, and who rigs the sections into position.
- Installation: how many engineers, how many days, who pays travel and accommodation.
- Commissioning: the acceptance test, the sample units, and the figures the line must hit before you sign off.
- Training: how many operators, in what language, and whether maintenance training is included as well as operating.
- Spare parts: a priced two year kit with part numbers, including brushes, nozzles, pump seals, sealant mixers and the light curtain.
- Warranty term, what it covers, and how long a replacement part takes to reach you.
- Utilities you must supply: power and phases, compressed air flow and pressure, water quality and drain.
- Component brands for the PLC, drives, servos and pumps, and whether you can buy them locally.
Lead times, installation and running costs
Treat lead time as two numbers: build time at the factory and time in transit. Ask for both. A line is built to your specification, so the build starts only after drawings are approved, and approval takes longer than buyers expect.
Have the floor ready before the crates arrive. A vertical line is long: the WONDEC ZK2500 measures 24200 x 3200 x 3600 mm, and the Neptun S.r.l. IG Line in IG WV AP300-26 form measures 22970 x 4050 x 3900 mm. Check height as well as length, and check the route from the door to the final position.
Three running costs matter. Water comes first: a specification of 40 microsiemens per centimetre or below usually means a demineralised water plant with its own filters and consumables. Compressed air comes second: the WONDEC ZK lines call for 0.8 cubic metres per minute at 1 MPa, and the ITECH TAURO Electromechanical Panel Press states 70 percent lower air use because it works with a vacuum pump. Gas comes third, and it is a real line item on any gas filled line.
Installed power is not consumed power, but it does set the supply you need in place on installation day. Warm up time counts too: the ITECH TAURO Butyl Applicator states 40 to 50 minutes machine heating time on its 8 kg charge.
Mistakes buyers make
These five come up again and again. All five are cheap to avoid at the specification stage and expensive afterwards.
- Buying the line and forgetting the spacer loop. The bender, the desiccant filler and the butyl extruder are separate machines. If the frame loop cannot keep up, the line idles.
- Ignoring the minimum size. Check the minimum against the smallest unit you actually sold last year, not the smallest you can imagine.
- Undersizing the sealing robot. The press finishes a unit in seconds, then the robot has to seal every edge. Compare robot coating speed against your press cycle before you buy either.
- Skipping water treatment. Poor water leaves a haze that no brush removes, and that haze is sealed inside the unit forever.
- Sizing for the largest unit you have ever been asked to quote. If facade work is one job in fifty, buy the standard line and subcontract that job.

Questions buyers ask
How much does an insulating glass production line cost?
Price depends on bed width, gas filling, spacer type and how much of the line is automated. A press for a small shop and a jumbo gas filled line are different classes of machine. Write your specification first, then request pricing from each manufacturer against it, broken out section by section.
How many insulating glass units can a line produce per shift?
Output depends on unit size, spacer type and how fast the sealing robot clears the press. The WONDEC ZK1800/2000/2500 Automatic Insulating Glass Production Line states about 800 double glazed units per eight hour shift at about 1 m unit length. Larger units run slower, so ask for output at your typical size.
Do I need a gas filling line for argon?
If you sell energy rated glazing, yes. A gas press floods the cavity as the unit closes, and the ITECH VEGA Panel Press and ITECH TAURO Electromechanical Panel Press both state fills above 90 percent. Filling by probe after assembly is slower and less consistent. Gas filling is often an option on a line you buy today, so ask whether the press is ready for it.
What is the difference between aluminium and warm edge spacer?
Aluminium bar is bent, filled with desiccant and coated with butyl on separate machines before it reaches the line. Warm edge is either a thermoplastic bead applied straight onto the glass or a flexible strip laid from a reel, and it cuts heat loss at the edge of the unit. Aluminium costs less per metre but needs the whole spacer preparation loop.
Can one line make both double and triple glazing?
Yes, if the press supports it. Triple glazing needs the middle pane held while the unit closes, which is why the ITECH VEGA Panel Press and the ITECH TAURO Electromechanical Panel Press use a central glass support system. Check maximum unit thickness too, because a line rated to 40 mm will not build a triple unit with two wide cavities.
