Glass Laminating Equipment: The Buying Guide
Laminated glass is two or more panes bonded by an interlayer. When it breaks, the pieces stay stuck to the interlayer instead of falling. That is why laminated glass is used in balustrades, overhead glazing, shopfronts, vehicles and anywhere a falling piece would hurt someone.
There are two ways to make it, and they need different equipment. This guide explains both routes, the figures that decide the purchase, and what to put in your enquiry. Every number below comes from machines listed on GlassMachines.net in this category.
What laminating equipment does and where it sits on the line
Laminating comes after cutting, edge work and, where needed, tempering and drilling. You cannot cut or drill a laminated panel afterwards without special equipment, so every hole and every edge must be finished before the panes are bonded.
The glass has to be clean and dry before assembly. Any particle, fingerprint or water spot is sealed under the interlayer forever, and there is no rework, only scrap. That is why the Handong Automatic Laminated Glass Production Line carries a washing and drying unit and a cleaning room in the line itself.
The bonding step then does three things in order: it removes the air between the panes, it heats the interlayer so it flows and wets both glass surfaces, and it holds pressure while the bond forms. The panel is then cooled, trimmed and inspected.
What comes next depends on the route. An EVA vacuum oven finishes the panel in one machine. A PVB line does not: it produces a pre-pressed panel that still has to go into an autoclave, such as the Handong Laminated Glass Autoclave, to become a finished product.
Types and configurations
Four choices set your laminating equipment. The first one decides the other three.
EVA vacuum oven or PVB line with autoclave. An EVA oven is a single self-contained machine. It seals the panel in a vacuum, heats it and cures the EVA film in one cycle. Automatic or semi-automatic line. On the PVB route the same process can be built two ways. The Handong Automatic Laminated Glass Production Line runs loading, cleaning, assembling, pre-pressing and unloading automatically, with assembly accuracy of plus or minus 0.5 mm. The Handong Semi-automatic Laminated Glass Production Line has its speed controlled centrally by the cleaning room PLC and is positioned for small order quantities across many specifications.
Flat or bent. Curved laminated glass is a separate process. The Fuchong FC-WYJ Series is part of a bent laminating line for architecture and automotive, with point support for the horizontal type and pole support for the vertical type. If you have curved work, say so in your first enquiry.
Fixed or expandable capacity. The Flat Glass Solutions DS Cart Laminator uses a moveable top furnace section over a static lower section, so a buyer can start with one lower section and add more as demand grows. The Flat Glass Solutions Multiple Layer Oven stacks up to four layers per cart, two carts per furnace.
How laminating works, step by step
The EVA route and the PVB route share the same physics. They differ in how pressure is applied and where the cycle ends.
- 1. Wash and dry. Both faces are cleaned and dried. On a full line this is built in, as on the Handong Automatic Laminated Glass Production Line.
- 2. Assemble. Glass, interlayer and glass are stacked in a clean room and aligned. A misaligned stack wastes interlayer and trim time. The Handong Automatic Laminated Glass Production Line states plus or minus 0.5 mm.
- 3. Remove the air. On the EVA route a vacuum is drawn around the panel, and the Flat Glass Solutions machines use a patented sealing system that removes the manual zip-up bag step. On the PVB route air is squeezed out by nip rolls.
- 4. Heat. The interlayer is warmed until it flows and wets the glass. Forced convection is the common method, used on the Handong Full Forced Convection Pre-press Furnace and stated as the heating method on the Billco Manufacturing, Inc. Lami-Pro Laminating Line.
- 5. Press. EVA ovens hold vacuum pressure through the heating cycle. PVB lines pre-press between nip rolls, then send the panel to an autoclave. The Handong Laminated Glass Autoclave works at 1.3 MPa and 130 degrees C across its range.
- 6. Cool and unload. Cooling is part of the cycle. The Flat Glass Solutions ovens release the vacuum, open the oven and run cooling fans automatically at the end of the program.
- 7. Trim and inspect. Excess interlayer is trimmed at the edge and the panel is checked for bubbles, delamination and trapped particles.
The figures that decide the purchase
Get these figures in writing from every manufacturer, on one sheet. Two decide more than the rest. Maximum panel size is the obvious one. Cycle time is the one buyers underestimate, because laminating is a batch process, and the cycle sets your daily output far more than any speed figure.

Choosing by what you produce
Pick the route by your product mix and batch size, not by the largest panel you have ever been asked about.
- Architectural safety glass in volume: the PVB route. A line such as the Handong Automatic Laminated Glass Production Line, feeding a Handong Laminated Glass Autoclave sized to your longest panel.
- Small orders across many sizes: the Handong Semi-automatic Laminated Glass Production Line is positioned exactly for this, with a lower investment than a fully automatic line.
- Balustrades, decorative interlayers and PDLC panels: the Flat Glass Solutions DS Cart Laminator is listed for this work, with cycle times from 1 hour and an expandable lower section.
- Studio and small shop work: the Flat Glass Solutions Studio Model Laminator is a self-contained oven for small spaces, taking panels up to 1500 x 3800 mm and 50 mm thick, with a clam shut roof that allows loading from three sides.

What a quote should include
Ask for every item below as a separate line, priced or marked as included. On the PVB route the autoclave is often quoted separately, so confirm what is and is not in the figure you are looking at.
- Factory direct price, broken out by section: washer, cleaning room, assembly, pre-press furnace, autoclave.
- Whether an autoclave is included, and if so which model and rail distance.
- Pressure vessel certification and documentation for your market. An autoclave is a pressure vessel and your authority will want paperwork.
- Export crating, weight, volume and case sizes, plus freight to your nearest port.
- Unloading and rigging. An autoclave is a single heavy item and needs a crane on the day.
- Installation: how many engineers, how many days, and who pays travel and accommodation.
- Commissioning: the acceptance test, the sample panels, and the defect standard the equipment must meet before you sign off.
- Training for operators and maintenance, plus the warranty term, what it covers, and how long a replacement part takes to reach you.
- Spare parts: a priced kit with part numbers, including heating elements, fan bearings, door seals and vacuum pump seals.
- Utilities you must supply: power and phases, compressed air, cooling water and drain.
- Interlayer compatibility. Confirm which interlayers the equipment is qualified for, and ask for the recipe for each.
Lead times, installation and running costs
Ask for build time and transit time as two separate numbers. A stand-alone EVA oven is closer to a catalogue product. A full line with an autoclave is a project, and the autoclave is usually the long pole, because it is a fabricated pressure vessel.
Installation needs the floor and the services ready first. A laminating line is long: the Handong Automatic Laminated Glass Production Line runs loading table, washing and drying unit, cleaning room, conveying table, full forced convection furnace, conveying table, unloading table, trolley and autoclave in sequence. Check the route from the door as well as the footprint, and check door height against the autoclave diameter.
Power is the main running cost, and it is large. Installed power is not consumed power, but it sets the supply you must have in place before installation day.
Cycle time drives everything else. Heating and cooling are most of the cycle, so faster heat exchange is worth real money: Handong states the Handong Full Forced Convection Pre-press Furnace runs about 30 percent faster than an ordinary pre-pressing machine, and the Flat Glass Solutions DS Cart Laminator states cycle times from only 1 hour.
Consumables are interlayer film, door and vacuum seals, and the trim waste at the edge of every panel. Seals are the part most often forgotten, and a leaking seal takes the machine out of production at once.
Mistakes buyers make
These five come up again and again, and all five are settled at the specification stage.
- Buying a PVB line and budgeting for the autoclave later. The line only pre-presses. Without the autoclave you have no finished product, and the autoclave is often the largest single item in the project.
- Sizing the autoclave to today's panel. Rail distance and internal length are fixed forever. The Handong Laminated Glass Autoclave range runs from 1800 x 4000 mm to 3600 x 20000 mm for a reason: buyers who guess low pay twice.
- Underestimating the electrical supply. Installed power in this category reaches 1100 kW. Confirm the figure for your exact model, and confirm your supply, before you sign.
- Skipping the wash and the clean room. Every particle left on the glass is sealed under the interlayer and cannot be removed. Clean glass is not a nice extra on a laminating line, it is the process.
- Ignoring cycle time when comparing quotes. A machine with a larger bed and a slower cycle can produce less per shift than a smaller machine with a fast cycle. Compare panels per shift, not bed size.

Questions buyers ask
What is the difference between EVA and PVB laminating?
EVA film cures in a vacuum oven, in one machine, in one cycle. The Flat Glass Solutions Studio Model Laminator, Flat Glass Solutions Multiple Layer Oven and Flat Glass Solutions DS Cart Laminator all work this way and accept EVA film from any manufacturer. PVB needs a line that cleans, assembles, heats and pre-presses the panel, then an autoclave. EVA is the cheaper entry; PVB is the volume route.
Do I need an autoclave to make laminated glass?
Only on the PVB route. There the line pre-presses the panel and the autoclave finishes it, which is why the Handong Automatic Laminated Glass Production Line lists the autoclave as part of the line. An EVA vacuum oven does the whole job on its own. If you are quoted a PVB line with no autoclave, you are being quoted half a plant.
How much does glass laminating equipment cost?
